[RFC] Lighthouse: Elevating Uniswap DAO Governance

Summary
This proposal advocates for funding Lighthouse, a cutting-edge governance lab designed to enhance the Uniswap DAO’s on-chain governance experience.

In addition to providing a modern voting experience we also deliver a secure messaging platform that can be used to reach UNI holders who have installed the Lighthouse native mobile app.

We have also recently publicly made available work on our own Signals Protocol, (https://github.com/0xLighthouse/signals) a new idea we have developed to augment on-chain governance and introduce new metagovernance dynamics.

We are requesting $125,000 annually for two years to support the ongoing development and integration of Lighthouse’s governance interface and Research & Development to the metagovernance space.

By establishing a relationship with Lighthouse, the Uniswap DAO will benefit from a more user-friendly, secure, and versatile governance tool that complements existing platforms and promotes decentralisation and also have a key seat in discussions in our upcoming protocol developments.

Motivation
While web interfaces have been a valuable tool to assist the Uniswap DAO, it’s essential for the DAO’s decentralisation, proliferation and resilience to have multiple robust governance interfaces and platforms.

Specifically native mobile.

Lighthouse offers unique features:

  • A native mobile voting client
  • Real time push notifications
  • A trustless way to connect with other Delegates (soon)
  • Voting on Proposals via Multisig
  • Consolidated TEMP checks and formal voting.

This funding will bring the following benefits:

Promote Diversity in Governance Tools: Multiple platforms ensure that no single point of failure exists and that users have options that suit their preferences. More importantly fund research & development of native mobile voting platforms.

Enhance User Experience: Lighthouse focuses on user-centric design, making governance more accessible to both new and experienced participants though our native mobile interface.

Basic modern features: Between 2019 and 2022, the time spent using mobile apps for global users increased by approximately 46 percent. If we expect governance and decentralisation to take root in a broader audience, we need to invest in native and user-friendly experiences. Expecting an everyday user to sign up to Discord to get important notifications is just not a good experience.

Introduce Advanced Features: Our roadmap includes innovative functionalities that will set new standards in DAO governance and on-chain collaboration whilst working with symbiotic protocols such as:

  • Hats Protocol (on-chain permissions)
  • Joke Race (Council elections)
  • Waku (E2E encrypted chat)
  • LivePeer/Huddle01 (Token Gated Audio spaces)
  • Farcaster and Lens.

Bolster Credibility to Lighthouse: We are a bootstrapped company that has already made significant progress, with a live product and support for a wide range of protocols and governance groups. Establishing this relationship with Uniswap will help build awareness of the amazing work we have already done and highlight our intention to become a valuable contributor and thinker in the governance space.

Achievements to date

Dedicated iOS and Android applications: Mobile development is notoriously hard. Dan Romeo (Warpcast) Was seeking 300k for a staff level React Native developer - https://warpcast.com/dwr.eth/0x6299d85e . Our experienced team has delivered an app that is on par with VC funded companies.

Metagovernance innovation: We are more than just a voting app. We have set out to build a wide range of technologies that make decentralised decision-making more effective, efficient, and fun. We are working towards a future where real-world decision-making systems can effortlessly be onboarded to take advantage of the unique benefits of web3.

Our most recent contribution to this domain is the Signals Protocol — https://github.com/0xLighthouse/signals, which was recently developed in collaboration with RNDAO with feedback from key members of the metagovernance community. (Tally, Aragon, Gitcoin, Arbitrum, Factory DAO)

We view governance as a technology we wish to accelerate.

Proposal Details

1. Lighthouse’s Current Contributions to Uniswap DAO Governance

  • User-Friendly Interface: Lighthouse offers an intuitive platform where users can view all proposals in one place, simplifying the governance process.
  • Mobile Wallet Integration: Participants can connect mobile wallets, enabling governance activities on-the-go through a native mobile application.
  • In-App Voting and Notifications: Users can vote directly within the app and receive push notifications, ensuring they never miss important updates.
  • On-Chain Commenting: Facilitates transparent discussions directly linked to proposals, enhancing engagement and deliberation.
  • Protocol/Network Agnostic: Lighthouse supports multiple protocols and networks, and is ready to support any additional protocols the Uniswap DAO might wish to integrate in the future.

2. Innovative Roadmap for New Consumer-Facing Features

  • Incentivized Voting: Implement mechanisms to reward active participation, increasing engagement and voter turnout.
  • Decentralised Social (DeSoc) Comments: Integrate social features that allow for community interactions while maintaining decentralization principles.
  • Reputation System and Attestations: Build a reputation framework to foster trust and recognize valuable contributors.
  • Zero-Knowledge (ZK) Feedback: Explore how verified UNI holders can contribute ideas to the DAO free of social markers.
  • Audio Spaces and Secure Chats: Create encrypted communication channels for real-time discussions and collaboration. All using your EOA.
  • Smart Notifications: Provide intelligent alerts based on user preferences and activity. Eg. If a proposal is ending soon and quorum is not reached.

3. Existing and Upcoming Enterprise-Facing Solutions

a. Authenticated Communication Channels: Establish secure lines of communication for official DAO matters.

* Foundation needs to communicate with Delegates
* Delegates <> Delegates
* E2E encrypted chats for council working groups.

b. Stakeholder Metrics: Offer analytics and insights into governance participation and trends.
c. Token-Gated Communities: Enable exclusive access to certain discussions or content based on token holdings.
d. Role Management (Upcoming integration with Hats Protocol): Implement sophisticated role assignment and management within the DAO.
e. Multi-Sig Voting and Asset Management: Support for multi-signature voting processes and efficient treasury management.
f. Proposal Ideas Board: A platform for brainstorming and developing new proposals collaboratively.
g. Immutable Records and Automated Broadcasts: Ensure transparency and permanence in record-keeping, with automated updates to the community.
h. Delegate Accountability and Scoring: Introduce systems to track delegate performance and enhance accountability.
i. Streamlined Grants Program: Facilitate efficient management and distribution of grants.
j. Effective Token Rewards and Incentivized Participation: Develop programs to reward contributions and encourage active involvement.

We recognise this is an ambitious roadmap and our execution as a bootstrapped org should demonstrate our conviction to the broader ecosystem.

4. Commitment to the Uniswap Community
Lighthouse is dedicated to working closely with the Uniswap DAO to tailor our platform to the community’s needs. We propose:

Active Forum Monitoring: Use our existing thread to collect and share feedback — https://gov.uniswap.org/t/mobile-governance-with-lighthouse-uniswap/24629/3

Quarterly Reports: Detailed updates on progress, including metrics on platform usage, new feature rollouts, and future plans.

Dedicated Support: Up to 8 HRS PCM, to be used on calls. A team committed to assisting Uniswap DAO members with onboarding and ongoing support.

Budget and Timeline

  • $250,000 to be allocated over two years
  • The Uniswap DAO will transfer $250,000 USD worth of UNI tokens to the UAC
  • The UAC will disburse funds to Lighthouse quarterly.

Timeline:

Presentation: Post this proposal for community feedback and discussion.
Incorporate Feedback: Adjust the proposal based on input from the community and stakeholders.
Snapshot Vote: Initiate an off-chain Snapshot vote to gauge community support.
On-Chain Proposal Submission: Submit an on-chain proposal for formal approval and allocation of funds to Lighthouse.

Conclusion
By funding Lighthouse, the Uniswap DAO will empower its members with a next-generation governance platform that enhances participation, security, and overall effectiveness.

This investment not only diversifies the DAO’s governance tools but also aligns with the principles of decentralization and community empowerment that underpin the Uniswap ecosystem.

We invite all Uniswap DAO members to review this proposal carefully and provide their valuable feedback. Together, we can build a more robust and inclusive governance framework that benefits the entire community.

Hi All,

I appreciate I/Lighthouse is a relatively new player in the governance space. However I did think our track record of:

Would at least warrant some feedback on this RFC.

What would be the best way in the context of the Uniswap DAO norms to introduce ourselves more concretely so we drive get more feedback?

Hey! Thanks for presenting Lighthouse; I personally find some of the features interesting. About getting feedback, I think you could probably request a slot in the next community call (not sure how it’s managed) – also, I wanted to ask if you could elaborate a bit more on points 3.h and i?

Thanks for the reply! Requesting a slot is a good idea. I will explore how best to action that.

Regarding the sub points: I will expand inline. They were high level ideas based on our general observations in the space and the idea is to expand and develop them in conjunction with various leading orgs to push the needle forward.

3h. Delegate Accountability and Scoring

We have observed that there is a large gap when measuring Delegates activity. We also have the problem where we have high context DAO members who contribute who are not delegates.

How do we surface, adjust and reward accordingly?

Also given discussions:

Given that the expected behaviour is that delegates report in a forum thread makes it very hard to synthesize voting activity and behaviours. Especially when they sit across multiple DAOs.

Our thinking here is to explore how this critical activity can be improved to bring it on-chain so we support the good actors and create robust systems for DAOs to make better data driven decisions.

We love @Curia and think they do an amazing job with their dashboards.

However this is static, how do we move towards building a dynamic delegate cohort that reflects and rewards good actors in a given system?

This also means tracking attendance in calls, on-chain to further contribute to these evaluations.

An extremely simplified example being, A member who participates in all votes, calls and discussions WITH positive feedback SHOULD naturally be ranked higher than members who do not.

We should be able to objectively achieve this.

** 3i. Streamlined Grants Program

This was another observation and experience that informed the development of https://github.com/0xLighthouse/signals

Currently it is extremely hard for the Grants and broader Initiatives to be allocated, so we have started building out a general purpose protocol that leverages gov tokens and game theory to help prioritise what gets funded/supported or addressed in a given community.

We think this is interesting because its a form of conviction voting that only places a users voting power at risk and the downside is their ability to not sell their tokens.

  • GOV holders are diverse and not all may feel comfortable voting on expert topics
  • They MAY feel inclined to participate in other activities.

I am not proposing to bin existing programs but advocating for more experimentation in how projects and initiatives can be evaluated in a decentralised manner.
